UCLA Signs A Fifth Standout In Women's Basketball

North High School's Julia Pitts is UCLA's fifth signee in women's basketball.

Nov. 21, 2001

UCLA head women's basketball coach Kathy Olivier announced today the signing of forward Julia Pitts to a national letter-of-intent. She will enter UCLA in the fall of 2002 as a freshman and become a member of the 2002-2003 Bruin team.

Pitts, a 6-2 forward, is from North High School in Torrance, CA. She is a three-sport athlete who has been named all-league in basketball, volleyball and track and field. She is expected to compete in basketball and track in her first year at UCLA and will have the option of playing volleyball in her second year at the university.

Last year, Pitts averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds per game. She was named All-CIF in both basketball and volleyball, where she plays the middle blocker position. Pitts was also the league track champion in the 400 meters event.

She comes from a very athletic family as her brother Devin Pitts is a wide receiver on the USC football team. Her other brother, Chester, is an offensive lineman on the football team at San Diego State. Her mother, LaVerne, was a basketball and track and field performer at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

"Julia is a very talented athlete who has excelled in three sports at the high school level," said Olivier. "She will provide a big boost for our future frontcourt. Julia's signing, in addition to that of the four players we announced earlier, gives us an outstanding overall class of recruits which ranks with the best we have ever had."

On November 14, UCLA announced the signing of three players - Nikki Blue, 5-8 guard from West High in Bakersfield, CA, Emma Tautolo, 6-2 forward from Moreno Valley, CA High, and Lisa Willis, 5-9 guard-forward from Narbonne High in Harbor City, CA. On November, 15, UCLA added 5-9 guard-forward Ortal Oren of Israel (Kiriat-Sharet High School) to the list.
